ABOUT:    AACAP
Between 7 and 12 million American youth suffer from mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders at any given time. Founded in 1953, the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) is the leading national professional medical association dedicated to treating and improving the quality of life for children, adolescents, and families affected by these disorders.

AACAP members are child and adolescent psychiatrists and other interested physicians who actively research, evaluate, diagnose, and treat psychiatric disorders and pride themselves on giving direction to and responding quickly to new developments in addressing the health care needs of children and their families.

The child and adolescent psychiatrist is a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy. Child and adolescent psychiatric training requires 4 years of medical school, at least 3 years of approved residency training in medicine, neurology, and general psychiatry with adults, and 2 years of training in psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families in an accredited residency in child and adolescent psychiatry.
